Abstract

The objective of this study is to see whether the information gap is effective toward students’ speaking skills or not at the second-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Metro. In this research, the researcher used a quasiexperiment design. The researcher taught two classes, they are; the experiment class, which is taught speaking by using the Information-Gap technique, and the control class, which is taught by using the conventional technique (teachercentered). The researcher gave both classes the pre-test and post-test with a speaking test and applied the treatments to obtain the data. The results of a study using hypothesis testing show that the first test uses a significance level of 5% or a significance level of 0.05. sig (2-tailed), the t-count (12.995) is greater than the t-table (2.048) with a significance of 0.000. Test the second hypothesis where the t-count (8.931) is greater than the t-table (2.000) at a significance level of 0.05. sig. (2-tailed) 0.000. Therefore, it can be said that using the Information Gap Technique is more effective and applicable for teaching speaking to the second-grade students of SMP Muhammadiyah 1 Metro. The researcher hopes that this research can be developed creatively for future researchers and add new knowledge, especially about the influence of using the Information Gap Technique on speaking skills, and can be information and motivation for those who want to conduct similar research.
