Advisors: (1) Bambang Eko Siagiyanto S., M.Pd. (2) Dedi Turmudi M.A TESOL. Key Words: Writing Ability, Explanation Text. Writing functions as the highest expression of language proficiency. This is very important for students in both academic and social contexts. Although considered challenging, especially in generating and articulating ideas in written form, students need help in selecting topics and conveying ideas effectively to improve their writing skills. This research seeks to assess students' writing skills and identify the difficulties they face, especially in the area of explanatory text composition. This research employs a qualitative methodology, which hinges on researchers as a pivotal instrument. Qualitative research is an ongoing, iterative process. It involves the collection, analysis, and interpretation of data and facts, ultimately leading to conclusions through inductive methods. The study included 33 students from class eleven social class one at SMA Negeri 2 Metro, selected through simple random sampling. The research utilized written tests, review sheets, and Google Form surveys as data collection instruments. The students achieved an average test score of 77.5, broken down into specific criteria: Formatting 74.2, Punctuation 73.2, Generic Structure 72.1, Content 97.7, and Grammar 75.8. The difficulties faced by students encompassed both academic challenges and, in some cases, physical conditions. The research findings indicate that the proficiency of SMA Negeri 2 Metro students in their work is reasonably satisfactory, despite encountering some challenges. These results suggest that there is room for improvement in students' abilities through ongoing teaching and learning processes.
