Abstract
Slang is a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are very informal and it also refers to the language used in members of particular groups. This research deals with the slang words used word formation of song lyrics. The researcher focuses on types of slang words used word formation processes. The objectives of the research were to describe types and correct meaning of slang words before changed into a new word by using word formation processes in song lyrics. Descriptive qualitative method was used to analyze the data. The techniques used in collecting the data is documentation. The data were analyzed based on the theory of word formation processes by Yule (2006) to indentify the slang words. From the analysis, it is found that 257 slang words in 14 songs using word formation processes and shows that there are 9 of 10 types of word formation, those are coinage with 1 word ( 0.4%), clipping with 155 words (60.3%), blending with 40 words (15.5%), compounding with 14 words (5.4%), multiple processes with 5 words (2%), borrowing with 6 words (2.3%), derivation with 23 words (8.9%), back formation with 10 words (3.9%), and acronym with 3 words (1.2%).
